The Training team works to address the needs of EAL pupils, and the staff who support them.

Training is organised in the following ways:

  • 'Talking Partners' is project that helps improve the speaking and listening skills of EAL learners. This scheme is also suited to all children from YR - Y3. It has also been used successfully in Y4, 5 & 6 and in special schools.  Liverpool has a dedicated team of two teachers who deliver a Talking Partners training programme to teachers and support staff.
  • The DfES Induction Module and Language Acquisition training package is delivered regularly to groups of teaching assistants. Trainers also provide information on issues that are specific to Liverpool.
  • Teaching and learning Strategies support EAL pupils in mainstream classrooms. This course is offered to Higher Education Institutions to prepare PGCE and BA (QTS) students to meet the TTA Standards for Teaching.  It  can also be delivered to newly-qualified and recently-qualified teachers to help them meet the challenge of EAL pupils in mainstream classes.
  • Other courses are delivered by consultants, who work at a national level. This is in response to surveys sent to schools.

The team responds to requests for training from schools and other departments.
