Under legislation, the Council grants licences which allow Marriage Ceremonies to take place in certain buildings.

When an application is made, the Merseyside Fire Brigade, and a Council Surveyor inspect the building. This is to determine if the place is suitable for the licence to be issued.

How do I apply for a Marriage Premises Licence?

You will need to complete an application form and return it to the Licensing Office.

Do I need to advertise my application?

You need to advertise your request in the local newspaper for one night only.  However, you must allow 28 days for objections to be received to this office.

A copy of a sample advertisement is included in the notes that will be with the licence you have applied for. You also have to advertise in the window or on a door at the building to be used for marriage ceremonies for 28 days.

What is the fee payable?

The fee for a marriage licence is £1,000. The fee must be paid at the time the application is made.

When will the application be granted?

All applications must be put before the Licensing Committee.  The Committee sits at least once a month. The average time it takes from making an application to it being granted is about 3 months

Do I need to make my application in person?

Yes. The legislation requires the application form to be signed. However, the Licensing service is prepared to accept an application form by email or fax, but you must post in the original application form to the Licensing service.
