Liverpool City Council - pet shops

Pet shops

Under legislation, the Council grants licences for Pet Shops to operate in the City of Liverpool.

How do I make an application for a Pet Shop licence?

An application form must be completed and submitted to the Licensing Service. You will also need to pay an application fee of:-

  • £110 for pet shops not selling kittens and puppies or
  • £220 for a pet shop selling kittens and puppies.

What do I get for the fee?

The fee includes a site visit by a veterinary officer for those premises that sell kittens and puppies. The environmental health and the RSPCA are consulted on the application.

All cheques should be made payable to 'Liverpool City Council'.

What qualifications do I need?

To operate a pet shop, the owner or at least one member of staff must have a recognised qualification or relevant experience. Please read the guidance notes if you are not sure.

How long will the application take?

A report is prepared to go to the Licensing Committee for their consideration. The normal period this takes is approximately two months.
