Liverpool City Council - Sefton/Liverpool Enterprise Growth Initiative

Sefton/Liverpool Enterprise Growth Initiative

StepClever

New businesses need help to survive in their first few years after being set up.

In 2007, Liverpool City Council and Sefton Borough Council won £22million in a successful joint bid from the government's Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI), a joint programme between Communities and Local Government, HM Treasury and the Department for Trade and Industry.

The name of this new partnership is "StepClever".

The funding - shared between South Sefton and Liverpool wards of Anfield, Everton, County, Kirkdale, Linacre and Derby - allows StepClever to support a variety of initiatives that encourage business enterprise.  New businesses starting here bring with them new jobs for local people from North Liverpool and the South Sefton area.  Attracting new jobs helps to improve the Liverpool economy by turning the area into a base for a new generation of entrepreneurs and successful, outward-looking businesses.

We plan to do this by introducing:

  • Enterprise Managers to make sure all secondary and primary schools teach pupils about enterprise;

  • Confidence-building and motivational activities for 16-25-year-olds so they are aware of opportunities in their area;

  • Start-up advisors and enterprise facilitation managers giving one-to-one business advice relevant to individual needs, including pre-start-up support targeted at new companies wishing to set up in the area;

  • Business Aftercare Managers providing a range of free services and products for both small to medium sized businesses and large employers in the area - thus reducing the risk of potential business failure;

  • The creation of Business Partnerships to help employers address crime and environmental degradation, and to improve relationships with regulatory agencies.

Specifically, we want to improve the numbers of people becoming self-employed, and particularly to double the number of women who are self-employed.

To achieve this, we can help secure finance to start a business, find suitable premises, and ensure that the premises are secured from crime.

We can also offer help and training advice to improve skills, help to manage a business, recruit staff and market products in the most appropriate locations.
