Hotel developments in Liverpool

As predicted, Liverpool 's status as European Capital of Culture in 2008 has seen the city's popularity to visitors reflected in the performance of its hotels. Despite a flood of new hotel rooms becoming available in recent months (including the £4.5million Hard Day's Night Hotel and £30million Jurys Inn), occupancy levels have remained a healthy average of 71.3%. Within 48 hours of Jurys opening in April 2008, 80% of its 310 rooms close to the popular Arena and Convention Centre were in use.
Liverpool is currently Britain's showcase to the world, with the international spotlight on the city. Not only is Capital of Culture status responsible for this, but also some significant local developments and attributes:-
-
By far the largest boost to the local economy is the £1.1 billion Liverpool One shopping/leisure/residential development on the city's waterfront - a massive scheme that will return the city to its place amongst the top 10 retail destinations in the country.
-
The £148 million Echo Arena & BT Convention Centre opened in January 2008 and has already had a major impact in attracting national and international conferences to the city, along with a host of big names and top acts to the arena - each bringing ever increasing numbers of the visitors to the city.
-
Many of the city's top tourist attractions have seen high levels of investment in the lead up to Capital of Culture, including a £35million refurbishment of World Museum Liverpool, a £22million restoration of St George's Hall, £12million on The Bluecoat, and £3million spent recently on the Anglican Cathedral's visitor facilities amongst many others.
-
Liverpool continues to excel in the world of sport: the Grand National pulls in ever-larger crowds following investment at the Aintree facility, whilst Liverpool's and Everton's success at top of the football league nationally and in Europe has seen the city's hotels benefitting from ever-growing numbers of visiting fans.
The city centre is not the only part of Liverpool benefitting from demand for hotel rooms. The number of schemes either proposed or underway in the suburbs are also growing. These include:-
-
Two new hotels at the proposed Wings Leisure Park on land belonging to LJL Aiport owners Peel Developments Ltd. The first, a 100 bed Express by Holiday Inn arrived on Speke Hall Avenue in spring 2007;
-
Approval has been granted for a three-star hi-tech hotel with 160 bedrooms over 11 floors directly opposite the airport terminal (Peel Developments Ltd);
-
a 101 bed Premier Inn has also been approved for another Peel owned site off Speke Hall Avenue;
-
and yet another development by Peel has a hotel included on a recently submitted application for a site known as Bluelands South which is also on Speke Hall Avenue;
-
a 150 bedroomed hotel was approved in February 2006 for the former Tea Factory site owned by Barnsfold Ltd near the junction of Speke Road and Speke Hall Road;
-
Away from Speke, BPS Developments Ltd received permission in April 2007 for a four-storey hotel/bed and breakfast at Paddington/ Highgate Street in L7;
-
Urban Splash obtained permission in October 2007 for a residential, leisure, office and hotel scheme in the former Littlewoods Building off Edge Lane.
