Area or site specific regeneration

Liverpool is changing for the better.  We are doing this by working with Liverpool Partnership Group, Liverpool Vision, the public and private sector and local communities.

In 2004, Councillor Mike Storey OBE, then Leader of the Council, dubbed Liverpool the "Capital of Cranes".  It is easy to see the changes both in the city centre and the suburbs.

A lot is happening, including:

  • changes in the housing market to increase housing choices
  • development of the commercial district
  • tourism/leisure/cultural facilities in the city centre
  • the Paradise Street Project, changing the way we shop
  • the industrial growth in Speke Garston, which is creating many jobs

Liverpool is truly a 21st century city.  The driving economic force of the region and a place of pride for the people who live there.

In this section:

City Centre Schemes:

  • Central Village
An 11-storey building and two hotels will be built above and adjacent to Liverpool's Central Station in a new £160million scheme by Merepark.

  • City Centre Living
Since the mid 1990's, Liverpool City Council has embraced and promoted city centre living.  New high-rise apartments have been built, and former redundant buildings converted into luxury living accommodation.

  • Commercial District
In 2002, a study carried out for Liverpool Vision showed that up to 1 million square feet of new grade A office space would be needed in the City Centre over the next ten years. By 2009, we are already well on the way to going over that target, despite the current recession.

  • Kings Dock
The transformation of the former Kings Dock next to the Albert Dock and River Mersey is underway.  What was once the largest vacant site in the city centre has become one of the most well known development sites in the region, and has already become an international visitor destination.

  • Lime Street Gateway
Lime Street Gateway, the area to front of Lime Street Station, is being turned a visually-stunning entrance to the city.

  • The Paradise Street Project / Liverpool One
Now virtually completed, Grosvenor's £1billion project now known as Liverpool One has become a resounding success story.  The largest retail scheme in Europe has transformed a previously mostly derelict part of the city centre and won a clutch of awards.

  • Pier Head
Liverpool's Pier Head area is undergoing a massive regeneration, with investment taking place on a grand scale.

Suburbs and City-wide Schemes:

  • Hotel Developments in Liverpool
Liverpool's reign as Capital of Culture saw record numbers of visitors come to the city during 2008 and help to keep the city's hotels occupancy rates higher than the national average.  According to the latest figures for the first quarter of 2009 from Deloitte, Liverpool's occupancy rate of 66% is still higher than the national average - suggesting that the pulling power of Liverpool's cultural offer remains.

  • Mersey Waterfront Regional Park
The River Mersey is the City Region's greatest natural asset.  Home to one of the most famous waterfronts in the world.  The Mersey Waterfront Regional Park provides a unique place for people to live, work, invest and visit.

  • North Liverpool
Working in partnership with public and private sector partners, the City is putting a great deal of money into making North Liverpool better.  Schemes include: Anfield Breckfield / Project Jennifer / North Liverpool Development Plan / Urban Village North.

  • Strategic Investment Areas (SIAs)
The European Objective 1 money that Merseyside received between 2000 and 2006 has now all been spent.  However, its legacy remains in the many sites with land cleared and prepared for redevelopment as offices, warehousing and industry that are bringing new jobs to the city's most deprived communities.

Other important schemes listed elsewhere on this website:

  • Eastern Gateway - Edge Lane
Edge Lane - one of the main gateway routes into the city centre - is undergoing a £65m improvement scheme which will transform the route from the M62 to the city centre by road widening to remove bottlenecks and create an environment that demonstrates the aspirations and status of Liverpool as a major European city.  Find out more.

  • Hall Lane Strategic Gateway
Hall Lane Strategic Gateway is a project to improve the important route into the city centre from the M62.  Development opportunities will be created including the formation of new frontage to the proposed Royal Liverpool Hospital development. Work is scheduled to start in 2009 subject to full funding being confirmed.  The project will be completed in Autumn 2010 and will link up with Edge Lane West.

  • Stanley Park
Stanley Park has recently benefited from a major regeneration project that has restored many of its historical features whilst meeting the needs of today's users.
