JET (Jobs, Education and Training) Services
The local economy in Liverpool is growing, with jobs being created at a faster rate than most other areas of the country. One of the major problems is that for some of the new industries which are setting up in the city, existing residents do not always have the right skills to give them the ability or confidence to apply for these jobs.
The Jobs, Education & Training (JET) Service was started in 1996 and has been expanded to cover the entire City of Liverpool. It is widely recognised as a model of good practice and is accredited to the 'matrix' Quality Standard by the Guidance Accreditation Board.
The JET Service offers a range of services to residents and businesses in Liverpool. It helps people match their abilities and interests with job or training courses. It also helps employers to find the right staff with the right training.
JET can talk to and help employers to take on job seekers, and to offer them training whilst on the job. It does this by working with local and inward investing businesses to make sure they can see that local people have something to offer. It also works with residents to make sure they have the right skills to find jobs with local companies.
The locally based teams of staff work from premises in each Cluster Partnership area, adopting a community-orientated approach to provide a source of professional, impartial and confidential help and advice to provide:
- full recruitment advice and support to employers, particularly those in the Strategic Investment Areas, whether for large scale recruitment or single vacancies;
- advice and guidance through a Personal Advisor or mentor service to help local people choose a career which suits their skills, abilities and interests;
- neighbourhood based programmes that help improve skills levels and employability;
- information on grants and loans that may be available to help with employer's recruitment needs or to pay for residents' career plans;
- help with job search, including writing CV's; completing application forms; preparing for interviews;
- support and training tailored to meet the needs of black and minority communities.
Five area based JETs and a city centre employer support unit known as The People Pool have been established to help increase levels of employment in Liverpool; and whilst each offers solutions tailored to neighbourhood need, all are linked together to offer a seamless advice and information service about opportunities on a citywide basis.
