Since the early 1990s, the European Commission (EC) has been giving money to the poorest regions of Europe.

Merseyside was one of the first UK regions to be seen as having severe social deprivation, and from 1994 was eligible to receive Objective 1 funding.  Objective 1 is the highest level of regional funding available.

Since the enlargement of the European Union (EU), Merseyside is no longer a priority area for funding but Liverpool and Merseyside do still receive money from Europe.  This is often matched by funding from the government.

The money is spent on a number of actions that help businesses to compete better in the marketplace.  It is also used to help to improve the economy and create new jobs.  In turn, this helps unemployed people into jobs and overcome social exclusion.

The European Affairs Team advises the Council and partners on funding available from Europe.  The team can help those applying for european funding to find suitable partners, as well as offering useful advice to negotiate the funding application processes.

In this section:-

  • European Structural Funds

Structural Funds are allocated to regions across Europe to create jobs and reduce unemployment.  For the period 2007 - 2013 Merseyside will receive more than 500 million euros from the EU Structural Funds.

  • EU Networks and co-operation

Liverpool City Council is committed to actively engaging with Europe and does through a variety of means.  These include membership of EuroCities (a network of the 130 largest cities in Europe), membership of the Mersey Brussels Office, and participation in transnational networks.

  • EU Transnational Programmes

Funding is from the EC to allow organisations in Liverpool to work with organisations elsewhere in the EU to look at new ways to address particular issues.  These include urban regeneration, social inclusion, research and innovation, ICT, education, environment, and culture.
