EU Transnational funds

The European Team advise the Council and partners on how to set up transnational projects.  These are where countries across Europe work together.  Help given includes finding suitable partners and applying for funding.

The team also collect information on a wide range of EU transnational funds.  Do you want to know more?   Have a look at the Grants & Loans section of the European Commission's website.

We are involved in 3 major projects at present:

  • URBACT

This will run from 2003 - 2006.  It is part of the EC's URBAN Community Initiative.  URBAN is aimed at towns/cities who can't make neighbourhoods better because of social or economic problems or environmental differences.

URBACT money is being spent in towns and cities with first hand experience of the URBAN Initiative.  It wants countries to talk to one another.  It also wants good practice guides to be produced by the cities taking part.

Liverpool is the lead partner on an URBACT project called "Partners in action - private investment in neighbourhood regeneration".  This looks at the role of PPPs (public private partnerships) with urban regeneration. The project is made up of 13 cities across Europe.

Do you want to know more?  Look on the URBACT website.

  • EQUAL

EQUAL Community Initiative wants to promote  new ways to fight all forms of discrimination and inequalities in the workplace.  This is done by countries working together on these problems. The programme also looks at how asylum seekers can find jobs in the countries they go to.  It also looks at how they can best fit into the rest of society.

EQUAL will operate from 2000 -2006.

The Council is a partner in an EQUAL project.  We work with a number of Merseyside-based asylum & refugee related agencies.  We also work with European partners in France, Germany and Italy.

The LASAR (Liverpool Asylum Seeker & Refugee) project has a drop-in centre offering help.  This project helps people fit into our society, and covers many issues such as:

  • showing both parents and children the education system;
  • making language skills better;
  • helping people find jobs and get better education;
  • working with professionals in education, housing and health to raise awareness of asylum seekers and refugees.

  • INTERREG

This project is about working together on a regional basis in the EU to make the economy stronger.  It will run from 2000 - 2006.

It does this by helping the continent develop in a balanced way, by cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation.

Liverpool is involved in the Artery project under Interreg IIIC. This project will work with partners (Netherlands, France, Germany, UK) to improve river access and improve the physical quality of river landscapes.  It will also develop potential tourism and public awareness.

Eurocities

Liverpool is an active member of Eurocities.  This is a city led network of 150+* cities across the EU. It is a strong forum for cities and has links with all of the national governments and European groups.

Its main aim is to see that urban affairs are high on the EU's policy agenda.  Most decisions taken at EU level affect cities and their citizens. Eurocities takes the lead to make sure their voices are heard.
