Core Cities
In 1995 the City Councils of seven major English cities began working together. They wanted to set out a vision of the important role that big cities must play in national and regional life in the 21st century.
These cities - Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester and Nottingham - agreed to join together to become "the English Core Cities Group".
These cities have seen industries collapse and long periods where many people were without jobs. They have also been often recognised by the government as needing help to sort out these problems.
For this reason, the cities can work well together on problems which they all share. And, together, they can ask the government to adapt or change its urban policy where doing so can help them and others.
The Mission:
The Core Cities aim is:-
"To work in partnership with Government and other key stakeholders to promote and strengthen Core Cities as drivers of regional and national competitiveness and prosperity with the aim of creating internationally competitive regions".
Objectives:
They want to:-
- strengthen and promote the role of the Core Cities as places where jobs and wealth are created both for their surrounding areas, but also nationally;
- improve the way that Core Cities can compete in European and worldwide markets;
- help to guide and change national and European urban and economic policy as it affects Core Cities and the areas around them;
- make sure all citizens in Core City Regions, particularly those living in the poorest communities, benefit from regional and national economic growth;
- make sure everyone living and working within Core Cities and their regions do so in a high quality and sustainable environment;
- make sure that the wider regional areas are involved with, and benefit from, the work that Core Cities does.
How:
They will do this by:
- working together with the Government and other stakeholders to deliver shared objectives;
- working together to influence policy and how and where money is spent in order to meet Core Cities objectives;
- lobbying for the interests of Core Cities, their regions and the communities they serve through partnership and collaboration;
- promoting joint working between Core Cities and their regions to meet common goals; share information and best practice; and benefit from innovation;
- making sure that the different regions work together to make the best use of the work that Core Cities does.
