With its port and airport, Liverpool is a major international gateway offering companies easy and quick access to facilities for importing and exporting goods across the globe.
Port of Liverpool
The Port of Liverpool, situated to the north of the city, is well located to serve the UK's biggest population/business concentration outside the greater south east. It handled a record of some 42million tonnes in 2005/6, maintaining almost continuous growth since 1984 when it handled some 9million tonnes of cargo. Liverpool Freeport has 3 million square feet of warehousing with another 400,000 sq ft planned.
In the container sector, Liverpool is the UK's fourth major port after Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury. It is the only major container port outside of the South East quadrant and is the leading port for containerised trade with North America - an important market of which almost half is export from the UK.
The sector generates some £131m GVA each year, and employs 5000 people direct through some 200 shipping agents and forwarding companies.
Owners of the port, Peel Ports, are planning to construct a new £90m facility at Seaforth to handle post panamax ships. It is due to be completed in 2010/11.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Cargo handling at Liverpool's rapidly growing international airport is expected to rise from 15,000 tonnes today to 220,000 tonnes by 2030. A proposed extension to the main runway will also increase opportunities for cargo to be carried on long haul flights to as far as United States, India, China and the Middle East.
Owners Peel Holdings are currently proposing to create a World Cargo Centre on land to the south of the current airport complex.

Distribution warehousing for import/export businesses
If your company is seeking suitable premises for warehousing linked to your import/exporting business, Liverpool Vision can help you find what you need from their portfolio of sites and buildings.
According to a study produced in 2006 by property consultants Knight Frank, Merseyside has become a major hub for so-called super-sheds - huge warehouses used by major distribution companies. The study reported that in 2005/6 the region saw one of the highest levels of speculatively built industrial units in the UK, with 22% of the UK's speculative new build projects being in the North-West.
The report says warehousing and distribution remain key drivers of demand in the market. Super-sheds led the way, with a 20% increase in the amount of developments over 100,000 sq ft in the period studied.
