The Alcohol & Tobacco Unit

The Alcohol and Tobacco Unit is the first of its kind in the UK. It is a Combination of officers with specific skills to help combat the illegal importation and the distribution of alcohol and tobacco products. The unit also promotes the Governments National Alcohol Strategy and the National Tobacco Control Strategy and is supported by the Primary Care Trust.

The unit is comprised of Liverpool Trading Standards Enforcement Officers and Merseyside Police Officers working in conjunction with other key agencies such as HM Revenue & Customs, the Immigration Department, and the Department for Work and Pensions.

ATU Mission Statement

. To disrupt and eliminate criminal organisations by identifying, investigating and arresting offenders who deal in illegal and non duty paid alcohol and tobacco products.

. To conduct financial investigations in conjunction with ATU financial investigators in order to seize and deny further access to assets and funds utilised by criminal enterprises and organisations.

. To prevent criminal encroachment of the legitimate industries by organisations trafficking in counterfeit and non duty paid alcohol and tobacco products.

. To assist local agencies and other key partners in order to thoroughly investigate the importation and distribution of illegal and non duty paid tobacco and alcohol products.

. To raise awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol and tobacco products on young people, peers and the community of Liverpool.

. To investigate and prosecute any person concerned in the sale or supply of alcohol or tobacco products to any child.
