Charitable collections

Do I need a permit?

You must obtain a permit from the council to carry out charitable collections.

Fundraising

Effective charitable work often depends on securing adequate resources. In many cases this depends on effective fund-raising.  As fund-raising is one of the principal influences on the public's perception of charity, the methods used and the integrity of the fund-raising are crucial to public confidence.

It is very important that trustees manage and control fund-raising effectively, efficiently and economically. The council will expect the highest standards to be adopted and systems protecting the money raised should be put into place.

The council has adopted this policy in order to help promoters and the general public in understanding the processes which will apply to the approval of charitable collections.

How to apply

We are now inviting applications for permits for charitable street collections in 2012. All applications will be determined in accordance with our policy on charitable collections and must be received by Thursday 17 November 2011.  Applications received after this date will still be considered, but will not be given priority.

Please read the policy and guidance notes before making an application and contact the Licensing Unit to check availability of dates before applying.

Return completed forms to the Licensing Unit.

Home Office Exemptions

National exemption orders are generally available to organisations which have obtained house to house collections licences in at least 70 to 100 local authority licensing areas for the two preceding years.
