Each library has a section with books for young people from 0 to fifteen. 

All libraries have free IT and internet access for children and young people.

Membership

Young people from 0 to 15 can register as library members when they complete an application form signed by a parent or carer.  

From 14, junior members may borrow adult books until they become full adult library members at 16. 

Junior members are not charged fines.

Picture books

  • Lift-the-flap.
  • Pop-up.
  • Board books.
  • Easy Readers.   

Stories for newly confident readers 

  • Junior Fiction.
  • Stories and full-length novels in hardback and paperback for more confident readers. 

Some libraries have stories on tape.

Activities

These are usually held in school holidays at libraries around the city, and include a variety of activities.  

Look out for details of events at your local library.

Teenage books

Mainly fiction, including:

  • Popular paperback.
  • Romance. 
  • Horror.  

Suitable for the 12 plus age group. Some libraries stock graphic novels.

Information books

  • Books on all subjects to help children with National Curriculum studies. 
  • Encyclopaedias, dictionaries and other reference books are also available.   

Some libraries stock CDs or books on tape.
