Burial

The City Council has six cemeteries located at Anfield, Everton, Kirkdale, West Derby, Allerton and Toxteth.
New Graves
New graves are available in Everton, Toxteth and Allerton Cemetery. If you decide to purchase a new grave, you are infact purchasing the 'Right of Burial' and not the grave itself. Only the applicant has the right to authorise any burials. Likewise it is only the applicant who has authority to arrange for the erection of a memorial on the grave. The rights are purchased for a period of 75 years, after which time you or your heirs will be offered an extension. It is very important that you advise staff at Allerton Cemetery Lodge of any change of address during this period and that a transfer of the rights is affected upon the death of the registered owner.
On the day of the funeral a grave deed will be sent to the registered Right of Burial owner. This should be kept in a safe place. Normally, new graves can accommodate up to two full sized coffins, along with numerous cremated remains caskets.
Re-open Graves
It is also possible to arrange for a burial within an existing grave. This is often preferable when families wish to be reunited with their loved ones. This option is only available if there is sufficient space and with consent from the owner of 'Right of Burial'.
Full Earth Woodland Burials
Allerton Cemetery has a natural woodland burial area. This provides an alternative to the traditional type of burial area as is offers an area with mature trees and a variety of natural plants and grasses. Graves are excavated to accommodate one full earth burial, so as not to damage tree roots. An adjacent grave may be purchased in reserve where family members wish to be buried together.
Burials in this area can only take place in biodegradable coffins. The grave is marked with an inscribed marker with an inscription being chosen by family members. This is as opposed to traditional headstones, which are not permitted in the woodland area.
The principle behind the natural burial option, is to provide an environmentally friendly alternative. It is not intended to reuse the graves in future. Families can therefore be assured that at no point will the remains be disturbed.
