Mortuary

The Liverpool public mortuary handles deaths in the community which have been referred to the Coroner.   The mortuary opened in February 1939; originally based on the Princes Dock, it is now on Pembroke Street.

Services

  • receipt and storage of bodies under the jurisdiction of HM Coroner
  • assist forensic pathologists with autopsies
  • provide facilities for viewing and identification of bodies
  • provide information and advice

We have a team of highly skilled mortuary technicians with special expertise.  These include reconstruction techniques following a post mortem examination.

To make sure we protect the health of staff and the public at large, all work at the mortuary complies with relevant health & safety requirements.

What is a post mortem examination?
This is a medical examination of a body carried out for the Coroner by a pathologist of the Coroner's choice.

The Coroner will give notice of the need for a post mortem examination; unless this is not practicable or would cause undue delay.

The consent of the next of kin is not required for a Coroner's post mortem examination; but the next of kin are entitled to be represented at the examination by a doctor of their choice.
