Liverpool City Council - marriage premises

Marriage premises

There are different procedures to follow depending on where you wish to get married.

Religious weddings

Church of England wedding
If you are planning a Church of England wedding you should contact the vicar of the church for advice on the legal requirements and fees for marriage.

Weddings of other religions
If you intend to marry in any religious building, apart from a Church of England, you must follow the procedure for giving a Notice of Marriage at the Register Office in the district(s) where you both live.

Marrying in a different district
You can only be married in a church in a different district from where you both live if:

  • either or both of you usually worships in that building
  • there is no church of your religion in the district where you or the person you are marrying lives.

Who should register the wedding?
Either:

a registrar from the district covering the building must be present at the wedding.  It is important that you make sure the Registrars are available before you confirm any other arrangements.

or

the governing body of the religious building can choose an Authorised Person to register the marriage instead of the Registrar.  An Authorised Person is someone authorised by the Registrar General to register marriages.

Is there a charge for having the wedding registered?
The fee charged at a religious building varies.  You will need to contact the person at the religious building who is arranging your wedding to confirm.
