Liverpool City Council - libraries

Libraries and information services

In 2002/2003 Liverpool's public libraries along with Community Legal Services were the first two Liverpool city council services to win Beacon Status from central government. The Beacon scheme is the governments way of pointing out best practice for all other councils to follow.

In the last three years Liverpool 's Libraries and Information Services has opened or refurbished nine libraries. As well as a vast collection of books, videos, CDs and magazines, Liverpool Libraries provide free internet access and computer taster sessions at all 24 public libraries throughout the city.

During 2002/2003, over fifty councils visited Liverpool libraries to learn from our experience and best practise.

In 2002 Liverpool's Central Library won best UK Online Centre for the North West providing up to 50 computer terminals for people of all ages and abilities. Support is provided by experienced staff including tutors from the council's Adult Learning Service.

Other developments include Surfzone for teenagers to chill out and surf the internet for free and Xpresszone so that people on the move can drop in to send and receive emails. The opening of combined libraries and one stop shops at Wavertree and Garston have attracted attention from near and far and set the blueprint for other councils to follow.
