Purpose of the exercise:

This exercise aims to facilitate the monitoring and reviewing of the progress of the CYPP in relation to services related to special educational needs and disability.

Who was consulted and how:

Parents/carers and children and young people were surveyed face-to-face at quarterly workshops

Who were the results of the exercise reported to:

The exercise were reported to:

  • Helen Winrow, assistant executive director Children's Services
  • Stuart Smith, executive director Children's Services
  • Councillor Paul Clein, executive member for Children's Services

What were the findings of the exercise:

Further focus groups were also held for the joint area review (JAR) inspectors in October 2007 (see the JAR web pages for more information on this inspection). 200 children and young people now have person-centred plans based on what is important to them as well as waht is important for them. The following points were raised dring the workshops and focus groups:

  • children and young people value the new way of working and feel that there voice is heard and are meaningfully involved

  • the Fusion service is particularly valued as children and young people decide what they do and what activities are organised - and they would like more of it.

What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the exercise:

Extra funding has been allocated to the Fusion service from the carers granr (£20k) that will provide four extra residentials through Summer 2008. A couple of young people have also been recruited as volunteer peer supporters to service when they have 'left' at 18.
