Draft cultural strategy for Liverpool.

Purpose of the exercise:

Last year we carried out a consultation exercise to determine the themes around which a cultural strategy would be drafted. This exercise is will enable us to draft strategy around the themes decided upon last year. It will also  help us to define a continued role for culture in the city's regeneration and will also provide a framework that we can use to work together, with our partners, to maximise the contribution of culture in the city's regeneration over the next five years.

Who was consulted and how:

The following will be consulted, the:

  • cultural sector, culture delivery partners and key stakeholders.

  • 10 thematic networks that are part of the Liverpool Community Network.

  • staff in the council's Culture, Media and Sport, Regeneration, Children's Services and Community Services portfolios.

Members of the public will consulted on the cultural strategy by Liverpool First. Visit their consultation page for more information on this aspect of the cultural strategy consultation.

A variety of methods will be used including:

  • email.

  • face-to-face.

  • written, sending copies of the draft strategy to consultees and asking them for their opinion.

What were the findings of the exercise:

We were told that we needed to strengthen the draft strategy in following main areas:

  • vision.

  • leadership.

  • distinctiveness.

  • successes/lessons from European Capital of Culture 2008.

  • contribution to the priorities of other sectors.

  • implementation.

We were also told that we need to strengthen the following important areas:

  • faith and culture.

  • heritage.

  • communities, sports and sport businesses, coaching, volunteering and sports clubs.

  • digital and new media.

  • libraries and archives, including family history.

  • cultural assets, opportunities and challenges.

  • private sector, including enterprise.

  • a link to the Dept. Culture, Media and Sport strategies (Creative Britain, McMaster etc).

  • the Olympics and cultural Olympiad.

We were also told that we need to clarify the position of tourism in the strategy.

What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the consultation:

The draft cultural strategy was updated to include the feedback we received.
