Purpose of the exercise:

This consultation was carried out to establish service users' outcomes for the mental health joint commissioning strategy.

Who was consulted and how:

Service users were consulted at an engagement session.

Who will the results of the exercise be reported to:

The results will be reported to the mental health joint commissioning group.

What were the findings of the exercise:

Over 120 people attended the engagement session. The following issues were raised:

  • information gaps were identified for mental distress and mental health promotion, current changes to services, the services available and direct payments.

  • the needs of asylum seekers, including those with mental distress, are presently not being met.

  • good community centres, with a range of activities, are crucial.

  • the are gaps is service provision for those with a dual diagnosis of mental health and addiction problems.

  • employers need training in mental health awareness.

  • we need to work with children at a younger age, both to  challenge the stigma of mental health and prevent mental ill-health.

What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the consultation:

The issues that were raised at the session will be incorporated into the mental health joint commissioning strategy and its action plan.
