Start date: 2 April 2007

End date: 29 February 2008

Purpose of the exercise:

This consultation exercise will inform the programme of the main commemorative event, which took place on 27th January 2008. It will also evaluate the event's success and inform future Holocaust Memorial Day events that may take place in the city.

Who was consulted and how:

Council officers, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the Culture Company and community group representatives were consulted via the setting up of a sub-group to the National Holocaust Memorial Day 2008 steering group.

Who were the results of the exercise reported to:

The results will be reported to the Leader of the council.

What were the findings of the exercise:

The understanding of Jewish culture and the cultures of all those persecuted gained from the steering group was invaluable in producing the project. The need for the civic list (the list of people invited to civic events) to be renewed to make it more representative of the communities was also raised. The feedack received on the performance of the 08 programme was also extremely beneficial.

What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the consultation:

A month long programme of events, including a major public performance and the Philharmonic and the RESPECTacles exhibition were held, as well as the National Holocaust Memorial Day events. A closer working relationship between the key community groups and the Civic office has also been established and the civic list has been updated.
