Start date: 6 January 2008

Purpose of the exercise:
To consult schools and health workers about the guidance and supporting materials issued to support staff who administer medication to pupils.
The review will consider the roles and responsibilities, procedures and the protocols linked to indemnity linked to administering medication to pupils. It will also outline the future monitoring and reviewing arrangements.
The policy, and its supporting materials, are co-authored by Children's Services and the Health Authority
Who was consulted and how:
The following were consulted via face-to-face and postal surveys:
- school staff
- parents
- pupils
- school governors
- the Joint Consultative Committee
Who were the results of the exercise reported to:
The results were reported to:
- Helen Winrow, assistant executive director for Children's Services
- Stuart Smith, executive director for Children's Services
- Cllr. Paul Clein, executive member for Children's Services
- the executive board
What were the findings of the exercise:
The following was raised as a result of the consultation:
-
difficulties in implementing procedures have been identified
-
gaps in policy and procedures around transport and self-administration have also been identified
-
recording keeping via bound books proved impractical
-
the policy also needs to cover all of the council's provision and settings, not just schools.
What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the consultation:
Special school nurses currently use a recording system that uses a card that folds in 3 to A4 size, we are investigating the use of these to replace the current bound books. A working group has been working through the summer to revise policies and procedures to address gaps and improve practicalities.
