Start date: 3 September 2007
End date: 22 October 2007
Purpose of the exercise:
Liverpool City Council's Children's Services travel policy describes how eligibility for free school transport is determined. As part of the Education and Inspection Act 2006 we are required to review and update our policy.
As part of this process we have developed a revised draft travel policy and would like to get the views of anyone who is interested in this policy.
We will carefully consider all responses received to the consultation and will maintain a register of responses that will be available for inspection on request.
Who was consulted and how:
Members of the public and key stakeholders were invited to read the revised draft travel policy
before giving their feedback by completing a short questionnaire.
Emails or letters were also sent to all local schools, further education colleges, transport operators, parents groups and selected community organisations inviting them to take part.
Who will the results of the exercise be reported to:
The exercise will be reported to the:
- executive board.
What were the findings of the exercise:
As the updated schoool travel policy extended the eligibility for support for transport to school, for example, reducing minimum walking distances, the vast majority of responses were positive and supportive. The guidelines to decide eligibility are statutory and some respondents commented on the highly technical nature of some of the language used in the guidance.
What are the changes to the service brought about as a result of the consultation:
An infomation leaflet in plain English has been produced for parents. Many respondents requested a further reduction in walking distances, however this could not be accomodated as the distances are statutory.
Read the report that went to the executive board at their meeting on 14 March 2008, and the reports appendices - the updated school travel policy and the consultation report (note: this file is quite large).
