City council budget 2007/2008

The City council approved its budget for 2007/08 on 7 March 2007. This sets out the Council's spending plans for the current financial year its estimated income and the level of Council Tax.

The City council set a budget of £698 million for 2007/08.  This budget is £8million or 1% higher than that set for the previous year.

In setting this budget the City council has taken account of general purpose government support of £283 million and £260 million Dedicated Schools Grant.  This represents an overall reduction in government support of £1million on 2006/07.

Having regard to the level of budget, general purpose government support and Dedicated Schools Grant the City council has set its own share of the total council tax for a band D property at £1,193.91 (3.7% higher than 2006/07).  The Police and Fire Authorities have set a council tax for a band D property at £127.53 (an increase of 5%) and £57.75 (an increase of 3.5%) resepectively.  

Why the budget has increased.   In the opinion of the Council the budget has increased from £690 million to £698 million (an increase of £8 million) for the following reasons:
