City Council Budget 2009/2010

The City Council approved its Budget for 2009/10 on 4 March 2009.  This sets out the Council's spending plans for the current financial year, its estimated income and the level of Council Tax.

The City Council set a Budget of £482 million for 2009/10.  This Budget is £17 million or 3.7% higher than that set for the previous year.

In setting this Budget the City Council has taken account of general purpose government support of £320 million and £270 million Dedicated Schools Grant.

Having regard to the level of budget, general purpose government support and Dedicated Schools Grant the City Council has set its own share of the total Council Tax for a Band D property at £1,308.15p (4.45% higher than 2008/09).  The Merseyside Police Authority and the Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service have set a Council Tax for a Band D property at £140.61p (an increase of 5%) and £62.37p (an increase of 3.85%) respectively.

Why the budget has increased

In the opinion of the City Council the Budget has increased from £465 million to £482 million (an increase of £17 million) for the following reasons:

  • Inflation and pay awards £24 million

  • Increase in payments to levying bodies £6 million

  • Additional investment in key services £5 million

  • Efficiency savings -£14 million

  • Other cost reductions -£4 million
