The Audit Commission is an independent body responsible for ensuring that public money is used economically, efficiently and effectively. Most local authorities' accounts are audited by the Audit Commission.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is a voluntary lobbying organisation representing almost all the local authorities of England and Wales. It aims to put local councils at the heart of the drive to improve public services and to work with government to ensure that the policy, legislative and financial context in which they operate, supports that objective.

The Special Interest Group of Municipal Authorities outside London (SIGOMA) is a rescognised interest group within the LGA representing predominately Metropolitan authorities. It lobbies on behalf of those authorities for a better financial deal from the government.
