Our key actions for 2006/07
The city council has made considerable progress on equalities over the past 12 months; however, we still need to do more by continuing to build on the good work that has already started in the areas of:
- black and racial minority educational attainment
- the way in which we deal with racial incidents
- meeting the needs of disabled people and the provision of services for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community
We will further improve our performance across a range of equality related fronts so that we achieve level 4 of the equality standard for local government, and we will maintain a focused performance management approach to our equality work.
In addition to our work to achieve the performance targets detailed in this plan, we will focus on delivering the following key actions during 2006/07:
- develop a disability equality scheme in line with the positive duty to promote disability
- monitor and review the implementation of the new racial harassment and hate crime policy and procedures
- publish race equality impact assessments and monitor the outcomes of them
- undertake a review of services for children looked after by the authority (carried forward from last year)
- improve services to the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-sexual community using the action plan as a vehicle for change
- review actions to improve the educational attainment of racial minority pupils(carried forward from last year)
- monitor and review the number of complaints the authority receives from service users of all ethnic groups.
