Councillors

The councillors are the elected representatives of the citizens of Liverpool and are the bridge between them and the council. 

Each councillor is elected for a four-year term and there are three councillors for each of the thirty wards (MS Word [22Kb] opens in new window) (90 councillors in total).

What is their role?

The main role of a councillor is to represent their ward, and the people who live there, through actively participating in the decision-making process. Their aim is not to be the council's representative in the community, but to be the community's representative in the council. 

They build relationships with individuals, groups and partners to inform, consult and empower residents and to facilitate effective and inclusive local government.

As well as being ward councillors, councillors can be appointed as a member of the executive board or any of the various committees that the council has, or represent the council on outside bodies, such as the Police Authority and the Primary Care Trust. These appointments are made at the annual general meeting at the start of each municipal year.
