Would you like to be better at reading, writing or maths?
Whatever level you are working at you can join one of our Basic English or Basic Maths courses.
You can discuss your learning needs with a tutor and will learn at your own pace in a small, friendly group. You can work towards a certificate or qualification if you wish.
You will be able to:
- improve your job prospects
- improve your skills
- help your children with their skills
- work towards a qualification
- learn particular skills you need for work or home.
Getting Started with Reading and Writing and Getting Started with Maths
These are two new courses which can help you learn reading, writing and maths at beginner's level. You don't need any prior knowledge.
Move On English and Move On Maths courses
These courses are for people who don't have an English or Maths qualification and need one to put on their CV, or help them progress at work.
The courses lead to a National Certificate in Adult Literacy or Numeracy. The qualification can be taken at Level 1 (basic) or Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE)

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are delivered at Granby, Park Road and Newsham Drive Adult Centres and many other outreach venues across the city.
Before joining one of our ESOL courses you need to attend one of our assessment sessions where you can discuss your learning needs and find out which course will be most suitable.
You can combine ESOL with other related Family Learning programmes, including:
- The Learning in the Family Environment (LIFE) programme, which includes courses on Family Literacy and Family Numeracy.
- The Bilingual Family Learning Programme, which provides ESOL Family Learning courses from pre-entry through to level 1 and 2. The programme also links with classes offered in a variety of subjects, including ICT, Sewing, Cookery, Gardening, Crafts and 'Enjoy Liverpool' a course which involves visits to places of family interest.
