Awards

An award is a form of benefit given to pupils or parents who may face financial hardship whilst in education. You can get awards for: 

  • bus/train/travel passes 
  • free school meals
  • uniform allowance
  • education maintenance allowance            

Usually, the amount of money you will get depends on the amount of money you have coming in. 

The issue of a travel pass is based on distance from home to school/college.

The process usually takes six weeks.

You do not need to pay the authority back once you have been given the money.

An award is usually given to parents of pupils of compulsory school age (15 years and under), except in the case of an education maintenance grant (pupils over 16 years).

How can I get an award?
To check if you can get an award, you will need to complete an application form. There are three applications forms available:

  • clothing grants and free school meals form
  • school bus / train / travel passes form
  • education maintenance form

Can I appeal?
Parents can question the amount given in an award if they disagree with the amount given.
