Liverpool City Council - loans

Loans

A loan is a form of financial assistance given by the local education authority and is given to students or parents returning to education who may face financial hardship.

It is usually a cash sum which is issued in the form of a cheque. The loan may be issued to provide financial assistance in just a few of the following areas;

  • Tuition fees.
  • Single parent living allowance.
  • Accomodation fees.
  • Book fees.
  • Food.

Usually, the amount of financial assistance is calculated via a means testing procedure on either your own income or your parents.

The means test is carried out by the local education authority.

The means test can be refused but this may affect the size of the award given.

The authority calculates the size of the award based on the means test.

The details are then passed on to the issuing bank.

All cheques are issued from the Student loans company bank based in Newcastle.

Except in the case of "single parent student allowances", loans are repayable at low rates of interest over extended periods.

There is an appeal procedure by which students can question the amount given in a loan if they disagree with the amount issued.
