Liverpool City Council - extra-curricular activities

Extra-curricular activities

Study Support (SS) / Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL), can be any activity that young people volunteer to take part in out of normal school hours.

We aim to raise achievement and support young people by:

  • Improving motivation.
  • Building self-esteem and confidence.
  • Making learning fun.
  • Helping them to be better learners.
  • Supporting inclusion.
  • Promoting better attainment, attitudes and behaviour.

Young people gain a lot by taking part in activities that they are interested in and enjoy.

They take pride in their successes, which leads to happier and more fulfilled experiences.

They develop better social skills, which helps improve motivation, self - esteem, confidence and attainment.

Ideally, every school should have a good programme of SS/ OSHL.

Activities should take place on and off school premises, and be accessible to all backgrounds, incomes and abilities.

By 2010, the Government wants all children to have access to a wide variety of Study Support activities.

Successful SS/OSHL clubs are created in discussion with:

  • Children/Young People.
  • School staff.
  • Parents/Carers.
  • Providers.
  • The local community.
  • The Local Authority.

SS/OSHL supports Personalised Learning, Every Child Matters, Education outside the Classroom and Youth Matters.

To find out what activities are planned at your child's school, please contact the school directly.

If you work in a school and want to know more about SS/OSHL, please contact Barbara.gowans@liverpool.gov.uk or telephone 0151 233 3901.
