Primary Modern Foreign Languages

Centres of Excellence

All primary schools in Liverpool were invited to bid to become a Centre of Excellence for Modern Foreign Languages.

Twelve schools have been chosen, they are:

French: Emmaus, Lister Infants and Juniors, St Mary's West Derby and Monksdown.

German: Dovedale Infants and Juniors, Greenbank and Knotty Ash.

Spanish: Arnot, St Austin's and St Sebastian's.

Each school has an advisory teacher and foreign language assistant (FLA.)

All staff can attend a weekly language lesson and parents can learn alongside their children or in the evening.

Each Centre has a link school abroad and teachers have made visits.

The Wider Project

The wider MFL project is funded by Service Level Agreements with the LA.

All schemes of work and materials are provided, plus training is available for class teachers who want to improve their language skills.

Every year Liverpool hosts teachers from Spain who visit schools where Spanish is taught. In addition Liverpool primary schools also host French sixth formers on work experience.

Liverpool is linked with Seville, allowing every primary school in the Local Authority to estbalish a link with a primary school in Andalucia. For further information contact Jayne Patten.

Regional Support Groups

These groups support early language learning at a local level and help to build MFL teaching in primary schools.

The Liverpool Regional Support Group (RSG) offers 5 evening sessions a year and covers Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley and Halton.
