Liverpool City Council - School buildings

School buildings

There is a diverse mix of voluntary, controlled and aided schools in the City which include two joint denominational schools, a joint denominational academy and a Hebrew school.

The Authority, in conjunction with its diocesan partners, has undertaken a significant programme of capital investment and renewal of its primary and secondary schools since 1997 with 36 new or redeveloped schools being completed during this period and another 2 currently under construction. In addition, a further 21 have undergone major refurbishment.

The remaining schools date from late Victorian era buildings to those constructed as late as the 1970's.  To assist local authorities to continue upgrade and renew its school buildings and transform teaching and learning the Government has introduced a number of major investment programmes.

Secondary Schools

The Building Schools for the Future Programme is aimed at transforming secondary education whilst at the same time being the largest investment programme in school buildings the country has seen.

Liverpoolis currently benefiting from investment from wave two of the programme involving the redevelopment of 6 secondary and 3 special schools. Further investment under wave 6 of the programme is hoped for that will benefit the remaining secondary and secondary special schools in the City.

Primary Schools

A similar programme of investment in primary schools will see 15% of the city's primary schools rebuilt or taken out of use over the next 15 years and 35% of the remaining schools in worst condition remodelled or refurbished.

Funding is dependant upon the approval the Authority's Strategy for Change being approved by Government in September 2008. Subject to such approval the Authority will receive a funding allocation of £16.5m for the first two year's of the programme starting in 2009.

Special Schools

Special Schools offer specialist support for children with a diverse range of special needs. The BSF programme will see a number of schools co-located with secondary schools as well as a number of mainstream schools being resourced to support these needs as part of a fully inclusive education system in the City. Significant investment in individual schools will also form part of the Authority's wave 6 programme.

Early Years

The Authority works with a range of partner agencies to offer holistic support to families and children from early years. In addition to the 5 nursery schools and nursery places within mainstream schools, 21 children's centres have been constructed or are planned over 3 phases that will eventually reach all wards in the City.
