Speech and Language
Speech and Language Therapy is provided by the National Health Service.
You can be referred through Health Visitors, School Nurses and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs).

The Speech and Language Outreach Service is provided by Liverpool Children's Services.
- This is a specialist support service which helps children with severe speech and language impairment.
- Supports children who are waiting for or leaving one of the authority's resourced bases.
- Consists of a central team and nine resourced bases.
Central Team
The services provided include :
- Pre-school support and advice for families and nurseries.
- Assessment of pupils' speech and language.
- Assessment of pupils' educational needs.
- Direct speech and language therapy or support for pupils in mainstream schools.
- Direct teaching or support for pupils in mainstream schools.
- Monitoring of progress and levels of achievement.
- Promotion of communication friendly schools.
- Provision of specialist resources.
- Advice and training for schools, nurseries and outside agencies.
- Provision of specialist training or inset.
- Liaising with Health, Social Services and other professionals.
- Working with families.
The Speech and Language Outreach Team is staffed by a speech and language therapist, specialist outreach teachers and an Educational Support Assistant (ESA).
The authority also provides for nine resourced bases:
Pre-school Resourced Base
This is part of Mab Lane Primary School. It provides for the needs of pre-school children who have a very severe and specific speech and language impairment.
Primary Resourced Bases
These can be found at a number of mainstream and special schools in the City.
All of these bases have between 8 and 10 pupils.
They are staffed by a teacher and Educational Support Assistant (ESA) or Nursery Nurse with speech and language therapy support.
- Hope Valley Primary School (both full-time and part-time places)
- Pleasant Street Primary School (20 full-time places)
- Matthew Arnold Primary School (20 full-time places)
- Beaufort Park Primary School -This school has two resourced bases - one for pupils with specific speech and language difficulties - and one for children with complex learning difficulties including speech and language.
- Bankview School -This resourced base provides for pupils with complex learning difficulties including speech and language.
The Secondary Speech and Language Resource Base
This can be found at New Heys Secondary School.
It helps pupils at secondary level who continue to have speech and language difficulties.
It is staffed by a speech and language therapist, a teacher and two Educational Support Assistants (ESAs).
The team also supports pupils with speech and language difficulties at other secondary schools in the City.
