Cold Alarms

The City wants to reduce winter deaths, and improve the health and comfort of people in their own homes.

Working with Scottish Power and Age Concern Liverpool, we have been giving Cold Alarms to elderly people. Designed and produced by Scottish Power, the Cold Alarm works by giving an early warning of unhealthy, low indoor temperatures. It will not prevent ill health - but will alert you of the problem so you can turn the heating system up.

Do you think you need a Cold Alarm? Do you know someone who does? Please phone Age Concern Liverpool on 0151 330 5678.

Energy Saving Light Bulbs

Liverpool City Council give out Low Energy Light Bulbs to give out to priority groups. Over 17,000 have been donated in the last three years. These bulbs have been given out by Local Solutions as part of their insulation contract.   They are also given out by Council staff at events and road shows. The council also purchase, at a low price, low energy light bulbs to give to non priority groups.

To claim your free Energy Saving Light Bulb, please phone 0151 233 2844.

Energy Packs

The City Council can send you a pack which gives useful advice on Energy Efficiency. We work in partnership with a number of groups, and these packs give advice on the different services given by: EAGA, Scottish Power, Energy Saving Trust, Energy Watch, Merseyside Fire Service, Age Concern and more.

Would you like to get an Energy Pack delivered to your home?  Please phone 0151 233 2844.

HABIT Project (Age Concern Liverpool)

HABIT (Health Advice Benefit Initiative Team) is an award winning service that targets the most vulnerable people.  It helps them to enjoy safer, warmer homes by giving them support to remain independent for as long as possible.  This is done by offering the best access to benefits and services on offer.   Age Concern Liverpool works with many partners to give this service, which is achieved mainly through home visits.

The team works with the local Primary Care Trust, the Health Service, the City Council and other agencies.   Joint working helps HABIT to reach people who are not engaged with other health and social care provision.

A successful partnership with the City Council has resulted in HABIT being a main distributor of cold alarms to vulnerable older people.

Age Concern Liverpool's Information & Advice team distributes information on health, leisure and social care to all who receive a home visit.   They also help people access home energy efficiency measures.

Watt Watchers (Education Project)

Every year, Energy Projects Plus helps Liverpool City Council deliver the Watt Watchers project in six Primary Schools throughout the city.  The project includes energy efficiency promotion and raising awareness of energy issues in the National Curriculum. Its aim is to educate children as future energy savers of the future.  In the last three years over 18 primary schools have been involved.

Energy Calendar

Liverpool City Council worked on a joint project with Nugent Care, the Sacred Heart RC Church Older Persons' Group and the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School to produce an energy calendar for 2008.

The aim of the project was to raise awareness of energy efficiency and provide hints and tips, whilst encouraging interaction between the young and older people.

The primary school children of all ages took part in a competition to draw a picture to illustrate an aspect of saving energy and keeping warm incorporating the hints and tips for each individual month.

The older persons group chose the finalists and the winning design for each month was chosen by representatives of Liverpool City Council, Nugent Care and the school. All the children who designed the pictures received a £10 gift voucher.
