Liverpool City Council - dog mess

Dog mess

Bag It and Bin It is a community campaign to promote responsible dog ownership. It was formed in response to overwhelming public demand and tackles every aspect of owning a dog.

As well as promoting responsible dog ownership, the campaign is working hard to create a clean, safe environment for everyone. Bag It and Bin It aims to put an end to fouling and straying by developing a city-wide education and awareness programme backed up by clean-ups and enforcement action where necessary.

Bag It and Bin It has a range of free material, including posters, leaflets and tidy bags to help promote the campaign and encourage good dog ownership.

What should I be doing?
It's easy to get into good habits. Encourage your dog to perform at home, where the mess is easily scooped and disposed of. If your dog is not keen to learn this new trick, carry a Bag It and Bin It `poop bag' (or re-use a plastic supermarket bag), then you'll never be caught unprepared when you are in a public place. The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, means that if you don't clean up you risk a fine of up to £1,000.

Always keep your dog under control, preferably on a lead and make sure your dog wears a collar and tag with your address on it.

You have a legal duty to look after you dog. Control and cleanliness, as well as proper feeding and health care, are parts of the deal of owning a dog.
