Liverpool City Council - improving air quality

Improving air quality in Liverpool

The Pollution Control Unit of Liverpool City Council plays a vital role in tackling problems related to air quality.  This Unit responds to queries and concerns from the people of Liverpool, actively enforcing the goal for cleaner air.

Liverpool City Council monitors and models air pollutant levels in order to assess current and future air quality.  This information is used to determine whether Liverpool is on target for meeting the Air Quality Objectives of the National Air Quality Strategy.

In areas where the Air Quality Objectives may not be met, Air Quality Management Areas are declared.  Measures can then be taken in an attempt to reduce air pollution in these problem areas.  See the following sections for information on Local Air Quality Management:

Individuals can also play a role in Local Air Quality Management.   There are many ways in which people can reduce their impact on air pollution.  For instance, walking, cycling and using public transport whenever possible will reduce your impact on traffic pollution.

It is vital that action plans and air quality strategies are developed so that industry, transport providers, road users, planners and others have the opportunity to help improve air quality for the benefit of everyone.

An important part of this process is identifying the most significant causes of local air pollution, and directing efforts towards tackling these causes.
