Liverpool City Council - material

What happens to the material ?

Multi-Material Collections

The materials you recycle in the blue bin or box at the kerbside are sent to a recycling facility known as a MRF. The MRF uses hi-tech machinery to separate dry recyclable material.

MRF means Materials Recovery Facility and it simply is a large shed with machinery that accepts mixed recyclable waste. The machinery sorts the material mechanically, magnetically, gravitationally and by air jets into the separate base materials which can then be sent to reprocessors to be made into new items.

For more information on the MRF, click on this link to view 'A Guide to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). (PDF [1.4Mb] opens in new window)

This guide is an explanation of the MRF and provides information on the types of information it can sort, and where the material goes.

Bring Banks

Paper

Paper collected from the banks is turned into fresh newsprint.

Glass

The glass collected is cleaned and crushed. The finished product is called 'cullet' and is used to make new bottles and jars.

Cans

Cans are used for scrap in steelmaking, turned into cars, fridges, bridges, railway tracks, steel frames for buildings and even more cans.

Textiles

Textiles from the bring banks sites are collected by the Salvation Army. If the clothes are re-wearable, then they are re-sold in various charity shops across the county. Some are sent to the third world countries

Green Waste

The material that is collected will be transported to 'White Moss Horticulture', where it will be turned into compost.
