Domestic refuse collection
The Refuse Collection Service is responsible for the collection and disposal of waste generated throughout the city of Liverpool. Veolia, previously known as Onxy UK Ltd is currently contracted to provide this service for the city of Liverpool; the current contract will expire on the 7th November 2008.
We operate a wheeled bin collection service, with over 170,000 households having been allocated a purple wheelie bin. In addition, some 35,000 terraced properties with back alleys are provided with a bag collection service, whilst another 2000 are served via bulk bins. Waste is collected on a weekly basis. For household residents there is no charge for this service.
If you are unsure of your allocated collection day or if your waste has not been collected due to a Bank Holiday, Liverpool Direct can tell you your next collection day.
How to use your bin
- bring your bin to the kerbside on your usual collection day by 7.30am
- for terraced houses, bring it to the nearest end of the passage
- put all refuse inside the bin and ensure the lid is closed
- ensure the handle faces the road
- take your bin back onto your property as soon as is practicable.

Contact Liverpool Direct to discuss your needs. - Who is responsible for the bin?
The householder, although the bin remains the property of the council - Can I put garden waste into the bin?
In areas where the Council's Green Waste Collection scheme operates, we no longer accept grass cuttings, twigs, stones, soil or rubble in the bins. Ideally you should compost garden waste at home. However, in 2005 we rolled out our new 'Green Waste Collection Service' whereby residents were issued with a green bag (now a green wheeled bin) specifically for disposing of garden waste.
