Liverpool City Council - Rubbish and waste

Rubbish and waste

Managing rubbish and waste is a key part of Liverpool City Council's Sustainable Development Plan (SDP). Its importance is recognised at both a National and European level.

The 1999 EU Directive on Landfill has had a great effect on how we manage waste in Liverpool. We are working to ensure that we meet the targets that have been laid out in the Directive.

As a result of the Waste and Emissions Trading Act (WET Act) 2003, the Government now sets out the maximum amount of biodegradable waste that can be sent to landfill by an authority.

The National Waste Strategy 2000 also sets out a number of targets that stretch us for the recovery and recycling of municipal waste.

We are responding positively to these changes, both in how we deliver services and in how we develop our future strategy.

The City's Waste Management Strategy sets out how we will manage and collect waste in the future.
