Smoke free Liverpool

Smokefree Liverpool Campaign
A 'smokefree squad' took to the streets of Liverpool on 23rd March 07 to mark the start of the 100-day countdown to a smokefree England.

More than 100 volunteers from the City Council, the NHS and other partners in SmokeFree Liverpool were aiming to visit up to 10,000 businesses in the city in one day.

They were distributing basic information about the smokefree regulations, and signposting support and advice so that businesses can be fully prepared for the introduction of the legislation in 100 days' time.

"It's a massive effort by so many people, but we believe it's extremely important to get the messages out face-to-face," said Andy Hull, Chair of SmokeFree Liverpool, and Head of Environmental Health and Trading Standards.

All enclosed public places and workplaces go smokefree from 6 a.m. on July 1, and a roadshow has already visited more than 1000 businesses in the city to communicate facts about the legislation, and answer questions.

"There are many areas which people want to know about, so we have put together a complete information programme throughout the 100 days," added Andy Hull.

Today's events began at 8 with the unveiling of a mobile Advan, which will be touring the city for the next 100 days, complete with a digital countdown clock. Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT, and other partners were there.

In addition, teams around the city centre and in the north and south of the city were giving away seed pots and other smokefree promotional and information items.
