Area Context

The Liverpool East Neighbourhood Management Area extends from Stanley Park in the north-west to the eastern boundary of the City with the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley. The area includes 6 wards (Anfield, Tuebrook & Stoneycroft, Old Swan, West Derby, Knotty Ash and Yew Tree) and the population totals approximately 91,000.

The area is very diverse and includes pockets of significant affluence along with significant deprivation. It is an area of key strategic importance to the City and Merseyside as it includes key transport gateways and provides opportunity for economic growth and development, particularly along the Eastern Approaches Strategic Investment Area.

The area is characterised by a varied physical environment with some predominantly suburban residential areas including West Derby, mixed use areas featuring light industrial such as Wavertree Technology Park, retail corridors including Old Swan and Edge Lane Retail Park, and some large scale industrial premises. The area is also home to Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Housing:

Owner occupation is the predominant form of tenure across the area, with particularly high levels in West Derby. Proportions of privately rented accommodation are above the City average in Anfield and Old Swan.

Terraced housing can be found mostly in the area, except in West Derby which has much more semi-detached property. Anfield and Old Swan have particularly high concentrations of terracing, and contain areas affected by the Housing Market Renewal Initiative.

Employment:

Wavertree Technology Park and Liverpool Digital are successfully growing new niche businesses.  The Stanley Industrial Estate includes the city's wholesale market.  Edge Lane Retail Warehouse Park provides employment in the retail sector, whilst both Alder Hey & Broad Green hospitals are in the area.
