Disability Equality Scheme

Welcome to the council's Disability Equality Scheme (MS Word [371Kb] opens in new window) and latest Action Plan (MS Word [470.5Kb] opens in new window). The Scheme outlines our commitment to ensuring that we work towards designing and delivering inclusive services and employment.

The council recognises that this is the first step to delivering equality of opportunity, and what is important to us is that we continue to involve and consult with disabled people in monitoring how effectively we carry out that which has been promised in the Action Plan.

The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 means that all local councils now have a legal duty to promote disability equality.  This is also known as the general duty and from 04 December 2006, applies to all public sector organisations including local and central government, fire service, police, and secondary schools.

All of these organisations must produce a Disability Equality Scheme which set out how they will meet the legal duty, and how they have or will involve disabled people in the development of the Scheme.

The Scheme is a living document which will develop over time, and any major changes to it will be carried out with the involvement of disabled people. Liverpool City Council has set up a Working Group which will meet every three months to monitor the Scheme's progress.

This group is made up of disabled people who are representatives from key community organisations, and their role is to make sure that disabled people within the wider community are involved in monitoring the council's Scheme.  The Scheme Action Plan will be reviewed each year and updated every three months.  The whole Scheme will be reviewed every three years.
