Support and training

A wide range of support services are available when applying to become an adopter. A social worker from the adoption team will offer support, guidance and advice and liaise for you with the relevant professionals and agencies.
After a child has been placed with prospective adopters, the length of time the adopters will wait for a court hearing can vary. During this time the social worker will offer support to the adopters, whilst the child's social worker will ensure that the child is supported and settled in their new home.
Once an Adoption Order has been made by the court, the social workers who visited you will normally withdraw. However, a post adoption support package is available to all adopters. Adopters can contact the local authority to request additional support in the years to come if any issues arise. The L.A has a responsibility to assess the need for further support.
All prospective adopters are offered pre-approval training to prepare them for their role as adopters. Post-adoption training is available if appropriate.
