Access to birth records

Section 51 of the Adoption Act 1976 enables adults over the age of eighteen in England, Northern Ireland and Wales (17 in Scotland), to obtain details about their births.

The responsibility for completing this work is now with After Adoption, a Liverpool based charity. After Adoption provide the following services:

  •  counselling facilities to people who have been adopted and to adopters 
  •  access to birth records
  •  access to the Lancashire and Cheshire Child Adoption Council Records from 1943 - 1979
  •  a letterbox system for the exchange of information between birth parents, adopted children and their adoptive families where this has been agreed
