Housing Market Renewal Initiative

Nine 'pathfinder' areas were selected to tackle the restructuring of local housing markets. NewHeartlands is the Merseyside pathfinder and covers parts of Sefton and Wirral, as well as Liverpool's inner core.
Housing Market Renewal in Liverpool
Housing Market Renewal in Liverpool is a 10 - 15 year programme working to address housing market failure. This long term programme of refurbishment, re-development and improved management of the area, is helping local communities to live in decent, desirable homes in attractive, healthier places.
Housing Market Renewal is not just about bricks and mortar, it is about responding to the issues that exist within the area to improve residents lives. Residents and their representatives are central to the programme and have been instrumental in shaping the plans for their area. In some cases they have worked with us to increase the demolition provision in their area or change the proposals for a specific neighbourhood.
Until the establishment of the programme there have been insufficient resources to implement a significant programme to address these issues.
Funding
Funding for the Programme comes from a variety of sources including:
- Housing Market Renewal funding from the Department of Communities and Local Government
- Housing Capital Funding from Liverpool City Council
- Government grant funding from other public bodies such as English Partnerships and North West Development Agency and from Working Neighbourhoods Fund
- Private sector sources.
The Government recently announced that the NewHeartlands pathfinder is to receive £152m for the period 2008-11. Liverpool's share is likely to be in the region of £87m over the three years.
