Housing Associations / Registered Social Landlords

Housing Associations/Registered Social Landlords are financed by government and local authorities through loans and grants. Since legislation changes in the 1990's; they have been providing social housing on an increasing scale; whilst the number of houses owned by the City Council has got smaller. This is because Housing Associations can access specific funding for improvements to homes which the Council cannot.
Since the City Council does not have access to sufficient funding to bring its homes up to the required Decency Standard; a decision has been reached to transfer the rest of its stock to Housing Associations. This is being done in consultation and agreement with tenants. Find out more about the continuing stock transfer process.
The government controls the work of associations through the Housing Corporation.
