Adapting Homes (Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant)
If you are elderly or disabled, the City Council may be able to give you a grant called a "Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant". This can help pay for changes to your home to improve your safety and mobility in and around your own home.
The grant is means-tested. It is only given for altering or adapting a property to meet a disabled person's needs. The disabled person does not need to be the owner or tenant of his or her home; but it should be their main home once the adaptations have been completed.
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page which you can read by clicking the link at the bottom of this page gives advice on what is available, and how to apply for a grant. It does not give full details about the law on mandatory disabled facilities grants. If you have any questions which are not answered on this page, please contact Agency Services.
Getting advice
It is a good idea to get advice from a qualified person when considering carrying out adaptations to your property. We may be able to help you.
If you are thinking about asking for any grant, it is important that you do not start any works which you want the Council to help pay for. We must give you permission in writing BEFORE you ask for work to be carried out.
You can get general advice about the grant from Agency Services office:
