 Private housing FAQ

I live in private rented accommodation but my home is in poor condition or needs repairs. What can I do?

You should first try speaking to your landlord to ask them to fix the problem.  If they don't, you have the right to ask us for help.  It is the legal duty of landlords to ensure that their properties are fit, safe and suitable for habitation.  If your landlord refuses to fix the problem, you can approach us to intervene.

I own some property which I want to rent out. What do I have to do to the property to allow me to do this?

The City Council's Public Protection Division has responsibility for issuing certification of proof that residential properties are suitable for habitation and therefore to rent out to potential tenants.  We can advise you on the relevant legislation regarding which building standards need to be met to ensure your tenants' rights to a fit, safe home that is suitable for habitation.
